In spring 2016, I took Basics of Orchestration at the Eastman School of Music with Aristea Mellos. As part of the course, we had seven orchestration assignments to demonstrate familarity with various instruments. Since I already had quite a bit of composition and arranging experience, I decided to have some fun with them!
J.S. Bach (1685-1750)'s French Suites were composed around the age of 30 while he was working at Köthen. They were written for teaching purposes rather than his court job, and the first five originally appear in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. They were first called French in 1762, and are not particularly French in character. The loure is a French Baroque dance, named after an instrument of the same name (a type of Baroque bagpipe). It is a slow to moderate dance with the weight on the first beat and a lilting rhythm.
