In spring 2016, I took Basics of Orchestration at the Eastman School of Music with Aristea Mellos. As part of the course, we had seven orchestration assignments to demonstrate familarity with various instruments. Since I already had quite a bit of composition and arranging experience, I decided to have some fun with them!
Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer who, among his over 1,000 compositions, wrote over 600 Lieder, including the famous Erlkönig and three song cycles. Winterreise, or "Winter Journey" was published in 1828 and is a setting of 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller for tenor and piano. Wasserflut, or "The Watercourse" is the sixth song in Schubert's setting.
