Program Notes:

I've played with Jacen Smith in the LCSO for the past three years and he has always been a joy to make music with! We decided to play a recital together in April 2026, but as we started to investigate we discovered that there simply is not that much music out there for clarinet and horn duo. I therefore decided to write a piece to add to the repertoire (and to our recital!). I chose to write for basset horn, which has the same F transposition as horn, to match range more closely and to provide a nice complement of timbres.

Horn as an instrument always gives me a sense of expanse and vastness - hence Vistas. The piece is not truly programmatic in any way, but at an abstract level is inspired by these four beautiful places that I have visited.
