Joe began studying clarinet in fourth grade with his elementary school's band program. He has studied with Donna Morse and Jason Bielik, and currently studies with Kenneth Grant at the Eastman School of Music.

Joe is committed to expanding the concert repertory, and enjoys developing and performing unusual recitals. Past events have included "The Clarinet, All By Its Onesie" - an unaccompanied recital incorporating movement, lighting, and projected images - and "Synthesis I: Classics Re-Imagined" - a recital of music by Weber, Brahms, and Debussy accompanied by jazz combo. He is also committed to expanding the traditional concert audience, having performed recitals in schools, libraries, and nursing homes.

In addition to solo recitals, Joe also enjoys playing in chamber groups and larger ensembles.
