Program Notes:

While playing together in an opera pit junior year (Ned Rorem's "Our Town", in case you're curious), my dear friend and fellow clarinetist Dominic Giardino approached me and asked me to write him a piece for his senior recital. Eastman requires that all degree recitals have a piece written in the last forty years. Dominic is an aficionado of earlier music - he has recently acquired a few period clarinets and is planning on continuing on in period performance. So, he was looking for a newly- composed piece in the style of Mozart. After much discussion back and forth, we settled on a fantasia on operatic themes, with a stationary harmonie ensemble and a variety of dramatic soloists. While it is of course possible to perform the piece with an entirely stationary ensemble, this is to be strongly discouraged as it was very much conceived as a theatre-piece.
