Program Notes:

This piece is the fifth in a series of Christmas gifts for my dear friend Noah Lauziere.

I wrote my first brass quintet in the summer of 2015 while attending the Bay View Music Festival. I ambitiously titled it "Brass Quintet No. 1", knowing full well that I had simlarly written a "Sonata No. 1 for Trumpet and Piano" three years prior that had never been followed up. I finally got around to writing another trumpet sonata in 2021, and the idea of writing another brass quintet remained, bouncing around in my head.

I also had unfinished business with my "Sonata for Ab Clarinet and Piano", conceived as a setting of mock-Renaissance dances. This is part an adaptation of that sonata for brass quintet, part a new composition - a new setting of the fictional dances from the imagined "original source".
