One of the benefits of staying in touch with my old high school's band program is the chance to connect with young adults passionate about music. Cole MacEwen is one such young adult, a current high school junior. We connected to talk about the college audition process and composition and somewhere along the way, he mentioned that I didn't have any pieces for trombone. This is true - trombone is one of those instruments that I rarely hear things on as melodies flit through my head in the brainstorming process (tenor saxophone is the other!), but he asked me to write a brief unaccompanied solo for him to work on. "In a Rush" is a deliberately theatrical piece, matching the personality of many trombonists I have known over the years.
